What is Thrush?

The scientific name for thrush is Candidaisis. Thrush is a fungal infection caused by any species of Candida, most typically Candida Albicans. Thrush can affect different parts of the body. It can affect the skin, the genitals, or the digestive tract. In babies and breastfeeding mothers, it can affect the baby’s mouth and the mother’s breast.

Candidaisis can even be life threatening on rare occasions, in the form of a systemic infection. This is rare and tends to only happen in people whose immune system is compromised, such as AIDS patients or cancer patients.

Why Is Thrush So Hard To Cure?
It is a misconception that thrush is hard to cure. In fact, curing thrush is very easy once you know how. The yeast which causes thrush is a natural part of your body's natural balance. Topical creams and capsules which kill thrush leave your body vulnerable to recurring thrush because they only kill the infection and do not tackle the root of the problem, which is your body's inability to naturally control the thrush. Under normal conditions Candida yeasts are typically present in the human body. In a healthy person, the immune system and other naturally occurring microorganisms keep the Candida in check.

When most people ask "what is thrush?", they think about vaginal yeast infections. Candida albicans typically exists in around 20 percent of healthy women’s vaginas but can also exist in the mouth, children and males. Candida carriers normally experience very mild symptoms. Antibiotics are one of the main causes of thrush, this is because they kill beneficial bacteria as well as the bacteria they are intended to kill, and thus give Candida the opportunity to grow. Symptoms of Thrush may include severe itching, burning and soreness. Vaginal thrush typically also includes a whitish or whitish gray discharge, which often has a curd-like texture.

What are the Symptoms of Thrush?
Under normal circumstances, babies will have Candida yeast in their bodies. Normally, neither you nor your baby will have any visible symptoms, but hormonal changes, changes to the immune system or antibiotics that kill the beneficial bacteria can give Candida the chance to multiply. In babies, the answer to what is thrush is the same, but the answer to what are the symptoms is a little different.

Thrush symptoms in your baby may include a white coating on your baby’s tongue. If the coating is on the baby’s tongue but nowhere else, then it is probably just milk residue. Oral Thrush will show white patches on the tongue but also on the sides or roof of the mouth, and can make the mouth very sore. Oral Thrush is not a pleasant experience and the first noticeable symptom is that your baby may cry when breastfeeding, sucking on a pacifier or a bottle. If this happens, look for the white patches. If you touch a white patch with a gauze-covered finger, the white stuff won’t come off to easily but if it does, it will leave a raw, red patch underneath. Thrush can be very easily cured if dealt with properly. Topical creams and capsules which kill thrush leave your body vulnerable to recurring thrush because they do not tackle the root of the problem, which is your body's inability to naturally control the thrush.

There is a cure for thrush
You may not know this but thrush can be cured. In fact, once you know how, thrush is very easy to cure and you don't have to spend a lot of money on anti-fungal creams which will never cure the problem completely. Thrush is caused by yeast which is a natural part of your body. The yeast never goes away, it is always living on your skin and parts of your internal organs. But what should happen is that your body would normally control the yeast itself with good bacteria which also lives on your body. So to completely cure thrush we need to bring your body back into balance. Now, the reason over-the-counter anti-fungal creams don't cure thrush is because they only kill the infection and therefore they do not help your body restore itself so it can deal with the problem itself. Over-the-counter meds only leave your body vulnerable to recurring thrush.
