Indications
Zedvin-T as part of combination therapy is indicated for the
treatment of HIV infection when antiretroviral therapy is
warranted. Maternal-Fetal HIV Transmission:
Zedvin-T is also indicated for the prevention of maternal-fetal
HIV transmission. The safety of zidovudine for the mother or
foetus during the first trimester of pregnancy has not been
assessed.
Description
Zidovudine is a member of a class of compounds called
dideoxynucleosides. It is a thymidine analog in which the
3'-hydroxyl -OH) group is replaced by an azido (-N[.sub.3]) group.
The chemical name of zidovudine is 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine.
The drug has a limited spectrum of antiviral activity. It is
active against human retroviruses, including HIV type 1 (HIV-1),
HIV type 2 (HIV-2) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1
(HTLV-1). It is also active against many animal retroviruses, such
as feline leukemia virus, Friend murine leukemia virus, Harvey
murine sarcoma virus and simian T-lymphotropic virus type 3.
Zidovudine is active in vitro against many Enterobacteriaceae, but
resistance develops rapidly. The drug has no activity against
grampositive organisms, anaerobes, mycobacteria or fungi.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
The drug is contraindicated for patients who have potentially
life-threatening allergic reactions to any of the components of
the formulations.
