Tricyclic-related antidepressants (related to TCADs).

Generic Special precautions: It is recommended that full blood
counts be taken every four weeks during the first three months of
therapy. Clinical monitoring should continue thereafter. Treatment

Tablets.
Presentation :
Tablets, mianserin hydrochloride 10 mg , 20 mg , 30 mg . Available
from Cox, Generics UK, Hillcross, Norton.
Indications :
Depressive illness.
Adult Dosage :
Initially, 30-40mg daily, in divided doses or a single dose at
bedtime. The dose may be increased gradually as necessary. The
usual dose range is 30-90mg a day.
Child Dosage :
Children: Not recommended.
Elderly Dosage :
Initially, 30mg daily then as per adult dose.
Contra Indications :
Recent myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, cardiac insufficiency,
severe liver disease. Not indicated in manic phase. Pregnancy and
lactation.
Special Precautions :
Cardiovascular disease, liver disorders, hyperthyroidism, tumours
of adrenal medulla, epilepsy, diabetes, glaucoma, urinary
retention, constipation, renal disease. Monitor cardiac and
hepatic function during long term therapy. Psychoses, patients
with suicidal tendencies. Reduce doses for the elderly.
Interactions :
With or within 14 days of MAOIs. Carbamazepine, phenytoin,
neuroleptics. Barbiturates, other antidepressants, alcohol,
anticholinergics, local anaesthetics containing noradrenaline (norepinephrine),
cimetidine, oestrogens, quinidine, antihypertensives.
