Description :
Lorazepam is an antianxiety agent belonging to the benzodiazepine
group. Lorazepam is an agonist at benzodiazepine receptors in the
CNS. It exerts a central depressant action on the CNS, which may
be mediated by potentiating the inhibitory actions of GABA in the
CNS. This will result in diminution of the ascending activating
systems, particulary the serotoninergic and noradrenergic pathway
from brain stem or the mid-brain to the cerebral cortex. It is a
highly potent benzodiazepine with a binding affinity to the
benzodiazepine recep- tor in brain considerably greater than the
binding affinity of nitrazepam or diazepam.
