Indications
Fantizole is used to treat fungal infections, including yeast
infections of the vagina, mouth, throat, oesophagus (tube leading
from the mouth to the stomach), abdomen (area between the chest
and waist), lungs, blood, and other organs. Fantizole is also used
to treat meningitis (infection of the membranes covering the brain
and spine ) caused by fungus.
Description
As with all azole antifungal agents, fluconazole works principally
by inhibition of cytochrome P450 14a-demethylase (P45014DM). This
enzyme is in the sterol biosynthesis pathway that leads from
lanosterol to ergosterol. Fluconazole inhibits ergosterol
synthesis in the cell wall of yeast and other fungi.
In Candida albicans, fluconazole may also inhibit the
transformation of blastospores into the invasive mycelial form.
Fluconazole is absorbed quickly after oral administration and is
widely distributed
Side-Effects
Fluconazole is generally quite well tolerated. In common with all
azole antifungal agents, fluconazole may cause hepatotoxicity.
