RIBAVIRIN IS INDICATED FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHRONIC HEPATITIS
C VIRUS (HCV) INFECTION IN ADULTS, CHILDREN 3 YEARS OF AGE AND
OLDER AND ADOLESCENTS AND MUST ONLY BE USED AS PART OF A
COMBINATION REGIMEN WITH INTERFERON ALFA-2B. RIBAVIRIN
MONOTHERAPY MUST NOT BE USED.
There is no safety or efficacy information on the use of
Ribavirin with other forms of interferon (i.e., not alfa-2b).
Each hard capsule contains 200 mg of ribavirin USP.
Excipients: Ribavirin contains 45 mg of lactose monohydrate.
Microcrystalline cellulose, Lactose monohydrate, Povidone K30,
Magnesium stearate.
Capsule shell: Gelatine, Titanium dioxide (E171) & Sodium lauryl
sulphate.
What is Verbetol?
VERBETOL (RIBAVIRIN) IS AN ANTIVIRAL MEDICATION OF THE
NUCLEOSIDE ANALOGUE CLASS. IT IS USED TO TREAT TREATMENT CHRONIC
HEPATITIS C IN CASES WHERE THE PATIENT HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN
TREATED WITH AN INTERFERON. RIBAVIRIN IS NEVER TAKEN ALONE.
IT IS ALWAYS PRESCRIBED AS PART OF A FULL TREATMENT PLAN FOR
PEOPLE WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS C, USUALLY IN COMBINATION
THERAPY WITH PEGINTERFERON. RIBAVIRIN IS AN ANTIVIRAL THAT
PREVENTS THE VIRUS THAT CAUSES HEPATITIS C FROM SPREADING FRTHER
THROUGH THE BODY.
How is Verbetol used?
Your doctor will prescribe you a suitable dosage of Ribavirin
capsules and any other medicines to be taken along with it.
Capsules are usually taken taken twice daily with food (most
often with the morning and evening meal). Swallow each capsule
of Ribavirin whole with a glass of water.
Ribavirin is only ever prescribed as part of an overall
treatment plan for Hepatits C including some other drugs. Often
this will be peginterferon.
Adverse effects
Verbetol (Ribavirin) and peginterferon can cause some unwanted
side effects. Some are common and should pass over time, while
others should be treated as more threatening.
Common side effects associated with Verbetol (Ribavirin) may
include:
cough
upset stomach
vomiting
diarrhea
constipation
heartburn
loss of appetite
weight loss
changes in ability to taste food
dry mouth
difficulty concentrating
difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
memory loss
rash
dry, irritated, or itchy skin
sweating
painful or irregular menstruation (period)
muscle or bone pain
hair loss
The list below contains some more serious side effects
associated with Ribavirin. Tell your doctor immediately if you
notice:
hives
swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet,
ankles, or lower legs
hoarseness
difficulty swallowing or breathing
pain in the stomach or lower back
bloody diarrhea
bright red blood in stools
black, tarry stools
stomach bloating
confusion
dark-colored urine
yellowing of the skin or eyes
unusual bleeding or bruising
vision changes
fever, chills, and other signs of infection
depression
thinking about hurting or killing yourself
mood changes
excessive worry
irritability
starting to use street drugs or alcohol again if you used
these substances in the past
intolerance to cold
Warnings
Your doctor will advise if Ribavirin is a suitable treatment for
you based on your medical history.
Do not take Ribavirin if you are pregnant or trying to become
pregnant. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
Shelf life : 3 years from the date of manufacturing.
Special precautions for storage : This medicinal product does
not require special storage conditions.
Nature and contents of container : Ribavirin is available
in PVC/PE/PVDC/Aluminium blisters and HDPE containers in the
pack sizes of : PVC/PE/PVDC/aluminium blister: 84, 112, 140 ,
168 capsules & 500 Capsules.
The following points should be considered when initiating
Ribasphere combination therapy with peginterferon alfa-2a:
This indication is based on clinical trials of combination
therapy in patients with CHC and compensated liver disease, some
of whom had histological evidence of cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class
A), and in adult patients with clinically stable HIV disease and
CD4 count greater than 100 cells/mm3.
This indication is based on achieving undetectable HCV-RNA
after treatment for 24 or 48 weeks, based on HCV genotype, and
maintaining a Sustained Virologic Response (SVR) 24 weeks after
the last dose.
Safety and efficacy data are not available for treatment
longer than 48 weeks.
The safety and efficacy of ribavirin and peginterferon alfa-2a
therapy have not been established in liver or other organ
transplant recipients, patients with decompensated liver
disease, or previous non-responders to interferon therapy.
The safety and efficacy of ribavirin therapy for the treatment
of adenovirus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), parainfluenza
or influenza infections have not been established. Ribasphere
should not be used for these indications. Ribavirin for
inhalation has a separate package insert, which should be
consulted if ribavirin inhalation therapy is being considered.
